Macular Degeneration

The MPOD is a device which analyses the macular pigment optical density contained within the centre of the retina. Macular pigment is a yellow pigmented substance which helps protect the retina from the harmful effects of blue light and also helps the retina maintain healthy function through its anti-oxidant properties. Reduced macular pigment density levels can mean the retina is vulnerable to developing age-related macular degeneration (AMD), the principle cause of vision loss in people aged over 50. People with AMD experience blurred and distorted central vision which progresses with time. Fortunately, macular pigment density is modifiable through changes in diet or supplements. The MPOD device’s quick and simple test provides us with valuable information enabling us to offer appropriate advice to each patient.
